The position is initially limited to 5 years. Reappointments are possible.The Research Center Borstel (RCB) is the lung center in the Leibniz Association with around 380 employees. We operate internationally and, together with the National Reference Center for Mycobacteria located at the RCB, we are also the supranational tuberculosis reference center of the World Health Organization. We have one goal: to improve existing methods for the detection, prevention and treatment of infectious and chronic lung diseases, and to develop innovative therapies.
WE ARE LOOKING FOR
a person with a holistic view on pneumology, and who follows an interdisciplinary approach. The candidate is nationally and internationally recognized in lung science, preferably in the field of infectious and non‑infectious lung diseases.
A university degree with a doctorate in a natural science or medicine, and extensive experience in the management of larger university or non‑university natural science or biomedical institutions or networks are mandatory. The German science system is already familiar to you and ideally, you are involved in national and international networks.
You are a committed person with excellent leadership, teamwork and communication skills who integrates, motivates and encourages employees from different backgrounds. Your profile is characterized by innovative thinking, strategic creativity, assertiveness and great negotiating skills.
You act in an integrative manner and develop the center in a future-oriented direction with a collegial understanding of leadership. Ideally, you have experience in policy consulting and transfer. You will advocate the goals and interests of the RCB with decision-makers from politics, business, science and civil society. A very good command of German and English language is a prerequisite.
YOUR TASKS
include, together with the administrative director, the management of RCB and its internal and external representation. You are primarily responsible for the overall scientific organization of the Research Center and for ensuring the scientific quality. To this end, you will be responsible for making decisions on the implementation and further development of the research agenda, advised by the institute's committees.
You are the primary contact person for the Leibniz Association and partner institutions, take the lead in various committees and coordinate and develop cooperation with our university and non-university partner institutions. You are the contact person for all committees (Scientific Advisory Board, Board of Trustees) and the responsible ministries. You are responsible for occupational and biological safety, radiation protection and animal welfare. Together with the administrative director, you will negotiate the annual institute budget and other funding for the maintenance and development of the center with the funding bodies.

Your remuneration corresponds to a W3 equivalent classification plus negotiable board of directors’ allowance. It is not ruled out that you may head your own working group that fits in with the research center or that you may be a part-time director.
