The Institute of Physics at the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences seeks applications for a

Professorship (m/f/x) in Solid State Quantum Optics
salary scale W2

commencing as soon as possible.

Studies of fundamental processes in the interaction of light and matter in nano-systems, especially in the solid state, are a focus area at the Institute of Physics. The professorship will further strengthen this area by exploring quantum optical phenomena that are of relevance for photonic quantum technologies.

The successful candidate should have an internationally renowned profile, within at least one of the following research topics:

  • Generation of entangled states of light and/or matter in solid-state nanostructures and their application
  • Interaction of non-classical light with single electrons and/or spins in solid state quantum systems

Contribution to the key research initiatives of the Institute of Physics and the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics is expected. The Institute is characterized by a strongly cooperative and emphatic culture. As the University of Oldenburg and the University of Bremen are bound by a cooperation agreement, active participation in the cooperation is also expected.

The successful candidate meets the following requirements:
  • A strong, internationally visible publication record in high-profile scientific journals;
  • A proven record of attracting substantial third-party funding;
  • Teaching experience and didactic skills;
  • A record in the supervision of bachelor, master and PhD students;
  • Candidates work team-oriented and will outline possible cooperations in joint research projects within the Landesgraduiertenkolleg "DyNano" in a concise concept paper (max. 3 pages) and will submit a teaching concept (max. 3 pages).

The newly appointed professor must be able to cover the entire spectrum of experimental physics in the teaching portfolio of the Institute of Physics. This includes teaching of basic courses in the Bachelor curriculum as well as advanced courses in the Master programme. It is expected, that the candidate is able to conduct teaching at the bachelor level in German within three years after appointment. Newly appointed professors will be supported by special coaching programmes offered by the university.

Prerequisites for employment are specified in section 25 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act (NHG). The University aims to increase its proportion of women in science. Equally qualified women will be considered preferentially. In case of equal aptitude, applicants with disabilities will be given priority in hiring decisions. The position is suitable for part‑time employment.

Applications including a full curriculum vitae, certificates, a list of publications, an account of present and previous third-party funded research activities focussing on the last 5 years, research and teachings concept (max. 3 pages each) as well as a list of courses taught and formal presentations given are to be submitted, preferably as a consolidated PDF file, by 21.01.2025 to University of Oldenburg, attn: Prof. Dr. Christian Schneider via
