The University for Music and Dance Cologne is one of the world’s foremost performing arts schools and one of the largest music institutions for higher education in Europe with its three campuses in Cologne, Wupper-tal and Aachen. The institution boasts a teaching staff of 540 including a large number of acclaimed figures from the international music and dance field, academia and education. They look after some 1,550 students from over 60 countries. Around 140 technical and administrative staff provide a wide range of services for teaching and events.

The Hochschule für Musik und Tanz ö is looking to fill the position of a

0,5 Professorship in Contemporary Dance Artistic Practice
(Pay Scale W2)

at the Cologne University Campus, department 7/ CCD (Center for Contemporary Dance) from winter semester 2025/26.
We are seeking a renowned dance-artistic personality who is able to impart contemporary dance-technical expertise in terms of diversity of methods in teaching. The area of responsibility also includes participation in the further development and design of the study and research profiles and the curriculum for the BA Dance in both specializations (Performative Practice and Dance Mediation) in accordance with the profile of the CCD (Center for Contemporary Dance). Tasks also include promoting the networking of the BA Dance course with the professional field and coordinating as well as supervising student projects and theses.

Our requirements:
  • Degree in the field of dance or an equivalent foreign university education or artistic achievements of equal value corresponding to the task
  • diverse methodological competence in relation to dance techniques and somatic practices
  • recognized individual dance artistic practice, in particular accomplishments and experience on stage 
  • outstanding communicative and organizational skills
  • relevant teaching experience at a university or at university level
  • a clear affinity for reflecting and theorizing one’s own dance practice
  • the willingness to actively participate in examinations and in the further development of study programs and teaching concepts as well as in interdisciplinary cooperation
  • the willingness to actively participate in academic self-administration committees and, if necessary, to take on administrative and/or management tasks
  • regular presence at the university
  • the willingness to actively participate in the artistic life of the university
  • a good command of English
  • good knowledge of German or the willingness to acquire this within 2 years.

The recruitment requirements are set out in § 29 of the Law on the Art Schools of North Rhine-Westphalia (“Gesetz über die Kunsthochschulen des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen”) Employment will be under private law with an initial fixed term of two years.
