The Department of Water, Environment, Civil Engineering and Safety (WUBS) has a particularly strong research focus together with an interdisciplinary and practical orientation and offers a broad spectrum of undergraduate Bachelor’s and consecutive Master’s study programmes.

Your new challenge

  • You will be responsible for the subject area of Timber Construction with a particular focus on application in teaching and research and will take on responsibility for the further development of the study programmes and the department.
  • The department has a very well-equipped testing facility with numerous laboratories, such as the component testing and structural dynamics laboratory, which may be further developed with your participation. Cooperation with other laboratories such as the fire safety laboratory and the structural physics laboratory is also desirable.
  • The professorship’s main area of Timber Construction also includes the restoration of wooden structures. Furthermore, you will also teach individual foundation subjects from the areas of Applied Mechanics and Statics in coordination with your Structural Engineering colleagues. If necessary, you will be prepared to take on additional teaching duties in the field of Structural Engineering. In the courses on the Bachelor’s and Master's study programmes, it will be of special importance to you to convey factual connections using suitable teaching methods in an application-oriented manner.
  • You will be committed to strengthening the specialist profile of the Department, will work on an interdisciplinary basis in the context of cross-departmental cooperation at the Magdeburg campus and will be involved in the development of the range of programmes offered. You will ensure that our students receive a forward-looking education, particularly for the area of Timber Construction.
  • Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences is entitled to award doctorates in fields with particular research strength. This means that we offer a research-friendly environment, which, provided that you meet the requirements, will enable you to play a part in our Doctoral Centre for Environment and Technology.
  • It goes without saying that you will be committed to technology and knowledge transfer and cooperation with regional and international stakeholders as well as to contributing to the development of the university. Moreover, it is important to us that you be involved in academic self-governance.

What you offer

You are a good fit for us if you are enthusiastic about teaching and research activities and you meet the conditions of appointment as set out in § 35 of the Saxony-Anhalt Higher Education Act. For the advertised professorship, these criteria are as follows:

  • You will have successfully completed a university degree in the field of Civil Engineering or similar and have a particular aptitude for scientific work, generally evidenced by a qualifying doctorate - predominantly in the field of Timber Construction. Furthermore, you will have published work relevant to the area of the appointment.
  • You will be able to point to particular achievements in the application or development of scientific knowledge and methods in as many subject areas of timber construction engineering as possible (e.g. shed construction, bridge construction) wooden tower block construction (e.g. timber panel and solid wood construction, wood composite construction) including digital planning methods and timber building renovation. You will have accomplished these in relevant professional practice of at least three years’ duration outside of the higher education sector. Experience of planning activities in structural engineering, preferably using timber, is expected.
  • You will enjoy communicating information in an understandable and practical manner, be it face-to-face, online or via hybrid teaching methods / blended learning scenarios. Experience in teaching in a university or a comparable educational setting as well as working with learning platforms will be advantageous.
  • Ideally you will be able to contribute up-to-date research ideas and some initial experience in the acquisition of third-party funds and the leadership of research projects. Equally, international experience is desirable.
  • You know how to convey scientific knowledge in an easily understandable way in both German and English and to communicate securely in German in everyday life at the university. Through your willingness to work in teams and talent for communication, you will demonstrate your enjoyment of working with students and participating in constructive discourse for the good of the university.

Would you like to help us give young people a university education?

Then please submit your detailed application via the online portal by 30.03.2025, addressed to the Rector, Professor Dr. Manuela Schwartz. We also look forward to receiving your application if you will only meet the conditions of appointment in the near future (date of decision by the appointment committee). The face-to-face interviews are planned for approximately 3 months after the application deadline. Provided that the relevant requirements are met (assuming, among other things, that the candidate is under the age of 52) the appointee will be granted civil servant status for life, otherwise they will be employed on the basis of a limited employment relationship under private law. As we consider face-to-face teaching and the integration of the university in the region to be very important, we assume that in order to meet the requirements of the professorship you will primarily be based in the region.
