The Faculty of Social Sciences and Cultural Studies invites applications for a
W2 Professorship in Educational Science with a focus on impairment of mental development
as of October 1st, 2025. Reference is made to § 67 Para. 7 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) and to the conditions of employment based on § 68 HessHG. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.
Duties:
The professorship is assigned to the Institute for Special Needs Education and Inclusive Education. You will represent the specialist area of educational science with a focus on impairment of mental development in its full spectrum in the areas of research and teaching. Your work will focus on analysing social conditions in connection with the individual life trajectories of people with mental disabilities as well as on the theoretical, didactical, and methodological conception of inclusive educational and support measures for successful learning processes in school and extracurricular educational and learning settings.
Your teaching activities encompass the undergraduate teaching degree course in Special Needs Education, the Bachelor's degree course in "Childhood Education" and the Master's degree course in "Inclusive Education and Elementary Education". Together with the Centre for Teacher Training, you will also be responsible for supervising students during their practical phases at school.
In addition to addressing the fundamental topics of the subject relating to children, adolescents and adults with mental disabilities, a recognizable ability to connect and network with the teaching areas represented in the faculty and beyond, also at national and international level, is desirable. This includes, in particular, substantial contributions to enhancing and further developing the international visibility of the Institute.
Your commitment to the promotion of young researchers at the Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU), e.g. in the Giessen Graduate Centre for Social Sciences, Business, Economics and Law (GGS) and the International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC), is expected.
You will use relevant external funding formats in individual and collaborative research to achieve your research goals. You are expected to conceptualise and conduct research projects, also in collaboration with other professorships of the faculty and the university, as well as to acquire competitive external funding.
Requirements:
You must have a university degree in educational science specialising in special needs or special education, an outstanding, relevant doctorate and additional academic achievements in the specialist field of education for the mentally disabled (proven, for example, by a habilitation or in the form of relevant peer-reviewed publications).
In addition to extensive teaching experience, success in the independent acquisition of external funding should be proven.
The inclusion of gender aspects as an integral part of educational science teaching and research is also a prerequisite.
In accordance with § 68 Para. 4 HessHG, proof of three years of practical experience in school teaching is regarded as a requirement for a position with responsibilities concerning school pedagogy, teaching methodology or educational sciences.
In case the candidate exceeds the basic age limit of 50 years, a civil servant appointment under § 66 Para. 3 sentences 2 and 3 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation (HLVO) requires a specific functional interest.
The JLU aims to employ more women in academic research. We therefore particularly encourage female candidates to apply. JLU also pursues the goal at faculty leadership level of increased competence in dealing with gender and family-related issues. JLU is regarded as a family-friendly university. Applicants with children are very welcome. Applications from disabled people of equal aptitude will be given preference.
We strongly recommend candidates to refer to our on application procedures. Please send your application with the required documents via (Bewerbungsbogen – application form).
Please send your application with the required documents via to the President of Justus Liebig University Giessen by May 8th, 2025, quoting the reference number 3-22/24.
