The University of Kassel is a dynamic university with around 22.000 students. The Kassel Institute for Sustainability is an academic centre set up in 2020 that combines research activities of all faculties and focuses on interdisciplinary teaching and research on the subjects of sustainable development in the competence fields of nature, technology, culture and society.

W2 – Professorship of “Urban Transformations” (m/f/d)

The professorship concentrates on practice-oriented research and teaching of urban transformation in the areas of architecture, urban planning and landscape planning from an interdisciplinary perspective.

The professorship is based at the Kassel Institute of Sustainability. 50% of the teaching will be provided in the newly developed sustainability degree programmes (also in the Bachelor's area), the other 50% in the department's degree programmes.

Applicants will have research experience in the field of urban planning and urban governance with a focus on sustainability with particular attention to the resilience of urban systems and their ability to transform. They have a scientific background in urban design, urban planning, landscape architecture, political economy, geography, governance research or sustainability studies. Lectures and seminars will have sustainability-related content at all study levels of the different degree courses, including the B.Sc. program “Sustainability Studies“. In addition to the tasks of academic management, it is expected that interdisciplinary co-operations between the Institute for Sustainability and the various departments of the Faculty of Architecture, Urban Planning and Landscape Planning will be arranged.

The successful applicant will have inter- and transdisciplinary research priorities with spatial concepts. It is expected that s/he has acquired in-depth knowledge in at least two of the following research areas and demonstrated the ability to combine them:
  • living labs in urban development
  • methods for the future/urban futures
  • climate-resistant restructuring of cities
  • open space planning
  • nature-based solutions
  • urban social and green infrastructure
  • social justice
  • climate justice
  • participatory transformation processes
  • multifunctional urban spaces
Applicants should also have experience of international and transdisciplinary transformation processes in terms of scientific analysis and reflection as well as implementation of them using the instruments of urban development and urban planning.

The successful applicant will have relevant academic publications as well as a significant project portfolio. The references should reflect the co-production of knowledge on various levels at the interface between science and society, including the co-production of knowledge with various actors at the local level.
