W3 Professorship in Medical Microbiology
as of the earliest possible date. Reference is made to § 67 Para. 7 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) and to the conditions of employment based on § 68 HessHG. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.Duties:
The professorship is associated with leadership and management of the Institute of Medical Microbiology, which is located at the Biomedical Research Centre Seltersberg (BFS) and focuses on human and veterinary infections.
The institute is part of the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF) Campus Giessen – Marburg – Langen. This also includes the newly appointed professorship in Translational Microbiology and lmmunopathology of lnfections at JLU in the context of the DZIF. The institute also closely cooperates with the German Center for Lung Research (DZL).
You are expected to ensure and further develop student teaching and patient care in the field of medical microbiology. The main task in the area of teaching is to design and participate in curricular teaching in the subject of medical microbiology, virology, parasitology and hygiene in the study degree programs in human medicine and dentistry. This includes participation in the main lecture and in the cross-sectional lecture on infectiology/immunology for the fourth clinical semester of the study degree programs in human medicine and dentistry as well as participation in the area of antibiotics teaching in pharmacology. The teaching of courses including lectures in the field of experimental and/or clinical infectiology and public health is also planned.
All tasks associated with the professorship in patient care are regulated by the UKGM. This includes the organization of molecular/genomic pathogen diagnostics of infections and participation in the antibiotic stewardship program.
During your employment at JLU, you are expected to achieve further success in the independent acquisition of external funding. You should actively participate in existing research networks, independently acquire research projects (preferably from the DFG, the BMBF and/or the EU) and participate in further national and international networks.
The current focus of the Institute of Medical Microbiology includes infection epidemiology and genome biology of bacterial (multi-resistant) pathogens. Further profiling in close cooperation with the infection-oriented research networks (e.g. Cluster of Excellence – Cardio-Pulmonary Institute (CPI), DZIF, DZL, FOR 5427) is desired. Integration into the JLU-s area of potential “infections, inflammations and active ingredients- as well as into the faculty-s accent areas “repair and regeneration-, “reproduction- and “translational oncology- is desirable. A complementary orientation to and close cooperation with the Institute of Medical Microbiology and Hospital Hygiene at Philipps University of Marburg, which focuses on infectious immunology, vaccinology and applied clinical environmental microbiology, are desirable.
In addition, cooperation with the professorship in Systems Biology at the University of Applied Sciences in Central Hessen (THM) and links to existing collaborative research projects are expected as well as cooperation in the Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences (GGL), the structured doctoral programme (JLU TRAINEE) and in the clinician scientist programme (JLU CAREER).
The integration of gender aspects in research and teaching is explicitly desired.
The universities of Giessen and Marburg and the University of Applied Sciences in Central Hessen are working together in a research alliance (Research Campus of Central Hessen) as a structured cooperation based on coordinated priorities. It is expected that the applicant shows cooperativeness to university and department-wide collaborative projects. In particular, cross university/hospital patient-oriented clinical research and the participation in joint clinical studies is expected.
Requirements:
Prerequisites for the position include a successfully completed university education in medicine, the ability to scientific work for the fulfilment of the tasks according to § 67 Para. 1 HessHG, usually proven by an outstanding doctorate, and excellent additional academic achievements (e.g. habilitation or relevant, international recognized publications). Your scientific and clinical competence should be proven by many years of experience in leading positions.
Success in independent acquisition (and management) of externally funded projects (preferably DFG, BMBF, EU) is a prerequisite as well as a specialist certification in microbiology, virology and infection epidemiology. You have a scientific qualification as a microbiologist (m/f/d).
You should have an excellent academic track record in your field of research, be internationally recognized and have a research profile documented by relevant publications. In addition, proof of special pedagogical aptitude is required as a qualification to represent the specialist field in academic teaching and doctoral training with great commitment and in its full scope.
In case the candidate exceeds the basic age limit of 50 years, a civil servant appointment under § 66 Para. 3 sentences 2 and 3 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation (HLVO) requires a specific functional interest.
